Urogynecology

Millions of women experience involuntary loss of urine called urinary incontinence (UI). While some may leak a few drops of urine while running or coughing, others may feel a sudden urge to urinate that can range from slightly bothersome and embarrassing to totally debilitating.

UI is a medical problem that can be addressed by our Women's Health Care providers at Saints Medical Center. Incontinence occurs because of problems with muscles and nerves that help to hold or release urine. The body stores urine-water and wastes removed by the kidneys-in the bladder, a balloon-like organ. The bladder connects to the urethra, the tube through which urine leaves the body.

According to the National Institutes of Health, women experience incontinence twice as often as men due to pregnancy and childbirth, menopause and the structure of the female urinary tract. Incontinence also occurs from neurological injury, birth defects, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and physical problems associated with aging.

The good news is that women do not have to suffer from urinary incontinence in silence! Most women can find improvement through therapeutic exercise, medication and, when necessary, surgical intervention. Your Saints physician can evaluate your symptoms and prescribe the necessary course of action to help alleviate UI and restore proper urinary function.
