Hospitalist Program

A hospitalist is a member of a growing medical specialty that focuses on the care of hospitalized patients. Hospitalists do not take the place of a patient's physician, but rather support the physician by providing 24-hour hospital-based care. By selecting a hospitalist to provide inpatient care, the primary care physician can focus on caring for patients during office visits and providing personalized attention on a long-term basis.

Saints Medical Center hospitalists have many important responsibilities, including ongoing communication with the patient, the physician and family members. The hospitalist can choose medical tests and evaluations, interpret test results, and make essential decisions about a treatment plan. In the event of an emergency, or even just to ask a quick question about patient care, the hospitalist is never more than a few minutes away from the bedside. In fact, Saints hospitalists are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are on-hand to see the patient as many times as needed during the hospital stay. The hospitalist can also facilitate connections with post-acute providers such as home health, skilled nursing and rehabilitation services.

With information provided by the primary care physician, the assigned hospitalist knows a great deal about the patient's medical history and current physical condition. At the time of admission, the primary care physician and the hospitalist discuss the patient's condition and review all medical records. Together, the hospitalist and your physician assure that patients at Saints Medical Center receive the highest quality of care.
