SAINTS HEALTH SYSTEM’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPOINTS
STEPHEN J. GUIMOND INTERIM CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

LOWELL, Mass., May 6, 2010 – The Board of Trustees of Saints Health System announced today that Stephen J. Guimond has been appointed interim Chief Executive Officer of the Health System and Saints Medical Center. Guimond, who has served as the Medical Center’s Chief Financial Officer since 2009, assumes the post held by Michael G. Guley, who is leaving Saints to pursue planned goals in the health care field.

According to Gary Campbell, chairman of the Board of Trustees, Guimond officially assumes his duties effective today, May 6, and will serve in that capacity until a new permanent CEO can be found. Guley will be available to advise hospital senior management over the next several weeks to help ensure a smooth transition, said Campbell.

Guimond, who has more than 35 years’ experience in the health care field, has been managing the hospital’s finances for nearly a year and has been instrumental in returning Saints to profitability.

In discussing Guimond’s appointment, Campbell said the Board was confident in his ability to exercise the kind of strong, decisive leadership the hospital will require in the coming months. “Stephen has the background and experience to take the lead and continue to push forward with a number of key initiatives that were launched this past year, including the affiliation agreement with Covenant Health Systems.

“We look forward to working with Stephen on these and other issues aimed at ensuring that Saints continues to meet the needs of the community by providing quality healthcare services in a compassionate Catholic setting.”

Guimond said, “Having had the opportunity to fully immerse myself in hospital operations and the Greater Lowell region, I have come to realize what an outstanding organization this is. My goal is to ensure that Saints does everything in its power to continue to provide the region with the highest quality care possible.”

Guley has served as Saints Medical Center CEO since January, 2006. The Board credits Guley with playing a major role in the hospital’s turnaround and, more recently, helping to establish the affiliation agreement with Covenant Health Systems.

“Mike Guley had a significant hand in the hospital’s return to profitability and in implementing a far-sighted strategic plan,” said Campbell.  “He initiated an aggressive and highly successful physician recruitment effort, opened the new Women’s Center for Health + Wellness, and put in place important new clinical affiliations with hospitals like Mass General. We appreciate all that Mike has accomplished during his tenure and wish him well.”

Strong and Diverse Health Care Background

Prior to joining Saints, Guimond was a Consulting Principal at Cape Healthcare Finance, LLC, where he contracted with Connance, Inc. of Waltham, Mass., to provide technical advice on product improvement and business development advisory services.

For more than 25 years, he was CFO at Cape Cod Hospital and Cape Cod Healthcare, Inc., a regional healthcare delivery system consisting of 310 acute care beds, a nursing facility, assisted living center, regional Visiting Nurses Association, multiple medical practices, a development foundation, and an affiliated captive insurance company.

Earlier in his career, he worked for Hospital Corporation of America, St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, Mass., Touche Ross & Co. of Boston, and Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Guimond earned his BS degree in accounting from Bryant College. He is a member of several professional healthcare organizations and philanthropic community groups.

While he is serving as interim CEO, the majority of Guimond’s CFO duties will be managed by senior staff within the finance department.
