New dialysis center focuses on patient comfort
Saints Medical Center opened its new 15,000 square foot dialysis center, conveniently located just off Route 495 at 847 Rogers Street in Lowell on January 21, 2008. Named Saints Medical Center Dialysis Center, the facility will be one of the largest non-profit dialysis centers in Massachusetts. With 32 state-of-the-art patient stations, including two isolation units, visitors are assured of a new level of comfort and privacy in addition to access to the latest equipment and enhanced support services.
Dialysis is a medical procedure used to purify the blood by filtering contaminants out of the body. The kidney's purpose in the body is to remove wastes and toxins from the bloodstream. A damaged kidney cannot remove waste, a condition that may cause serious illness or death.
"We designed a facility with patient privacy and comfort in mind," commented Donna Buckley, director of dialysis services at Saints. "The latest in comfortable chairs, a spa-like water treatment system, wireless Internet connectivity, flat screen TVs with DVD capabilities are all important parts of the overall patient experience."
Buckley further explained that all the comforts of home are important considerations for patients who are required to spend several hours at a time undergoing dialysis to rid the blood of harmful toxins. "Our goal is to create an environment that makes the dialysis patient as comfortable as possible with services and amenities to enhance the visit."
The new facility will increase Saints' dialysis capabilities from its current 21 stations that operated at full capacity. The center will be staffed with five board-certified nephrologists, including its medical director, Douglas Mesler, MD. "We are pleased to have the enhanced facilities and an experienced staff to assist our patients who need treatment in battling chronic kidney disease, said Dr. Mesler. "Together, we will deliver state-of-the-art care to help our kidney patients take better control of their overall health."
Saints Dialysis Center will offer free on-site parking with handicapped access readily available. For further information, directions and details, click here.
